British mathematician Clive Humby wrote in 2006 that “Data is the new oil. Oil is valuable, but it cannot really be used unless it is refined. It needs to be transformed into gas, plastics, chemicals, etc. to create a valuable asset that drives profitable activities. Data also needs to be separated and analyzed to have value.”, emphasizing the importance of data. Data has become the most valuable asset with all the digital developments that started in the late 20th century. In today's digital age, effective management of data is critical for organizations.
